Boggs Bags Sixth Annual American Heritage 101 at Brushcreek
By: Mike Ross
Peebles, Ohio--Drivers representing four states and fans from all over the region made the trip to the wicked fast Brushcreek Motorsports Complex on Saturday August 5th with the hopes of riding a "hawg" home. The winning late model driver at the sixth annual American Heritage 101 presented by Coca-Cola and Bob Malcom's Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep on Saturday August 5th would take home a brand new glacier white pearl, American Heritage Harley Davidson motorcycle for his efforts. While the fan paired with the winning American Heritage 101 driver would take home a brand new glacier white pearl, Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle. The motorcycle give-aways would not end there, as one kid ages 5 - 12 paired with the winning American Heritage 101 driver would take home a mini chopper donated by Hite Parts Exchange and one kid under 5 paired with the winning American Heritage 101 would win a battery powered Harley Davidson.
With twenty-three cars signed into the pits for an event that was slated to start twenty-four cars, the question was what would happen to the $1,000 the twenty fourth place finisher in the American Heritage 101 presented by Coca-Cola and Bob Malcom's Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep was scheduled to receive. Owner/promoter Tom Partin answered that question when he announced in the drivers meeting that the money would be put into the purse, divided amongst the drivers on hand, raising the previously announced start money from $1,000 to $1070.
Grayson, Kentucky's Jackie Boggs drove his McDonalds, Miller Brothers Coal, Hawkeye Trucking, sponsored Swartz, Monte Carlo to his fourth American Heritage 101 title, besting the field of twenty three drivers representing four states. While Xenia, Ohio's Greg Beam drove his MUHA Construction sponsored Pierce modified to the AMRA Road Warrior Tour "Heritage 30" feature win and Glen Crawford drove the Barry's Chevrolet-Buick Inc sponsored 4 cylinder to the 4 cylinder trophy dash win.
Cincinnati, Ohio's Rick Combs and Grayson, Kentucky's Jackie Boggs brought the American Heritage 101 field to the green. Combs and Boggs shot into turn one side by side at the drop of the green flag, by the time they had made it back to the flag stand Boggs had flexed his muscle and laid claim to the top spot with Combs following closely behind. Setting a torrid pace the two front runners would start lapping several cars in the first ten laps of the race. However, the action was slowed with lap thirteen caution when Delmas Conley made contact with the lapped car of Mark Koller resulting in a three car spin. Also involved in the wreck was Jason Witherite. The running order now was Jackie Boggs, Rick Combs, seventh starting Keith Barbra, Ryan Markham and Greg Oliver rounding out the top five.
On the restart, Boggs flexed his muscle once again pulling to a slight lead over Combs. An advantage he was able to maintain even while he encountered lapped traffic allowing, Combs to pull alongside several times, but Boggs would maintain the top spot. While Combs tried to wrestle the top spot from Boggs, seventh starting Keith Barbra would run the two front runners down, proving his win Friday night was no fluke. On lap twenty-four Barbra would wrestle second place from Combs and set his eyes on front runner Boggs. The action was slowed with a caution on lap thirty-two when Greg Oliver slowed with mechanical problems. The running order now would be Jackie Boggs, Keith Barbra, Rick Combs, Ryan Markham, and Chuck Harper rounding out the top five.
On the restart, Barbra would pressure front runner Boggs while third running Combs rolled to the infield with mechanical problems. Barbra continued to pressure Boggs until the third caution waved on lap thirty-seven when Joe Ramey rolled to a stop in turn four with right front suspension problems. The running order now was Jackie Boggs, Keith Barbra, Chuck Harper, and Jason Witherite.
Barbra would pressure Boggs on the restart, pulling alongside several times before finally making the pass on lap thirty-nine. Once past Boggs, Barbra would pull to about a four car length lead. A lead he would maintain until the action was slowed with a lap forty-four caution when Jason Witherite spun coming out of turn four. The running order now was Keith Barbra, Jackie Boggs, Chuck Harper and Scott Edmisten.
On the restart, Boggs pressured Barbra until the front runner was finally able to pull to about a car length lead. Barbra appeared to be well onto his way to claiming his first American Heritage 101 title when disaster struck on lap 53. The lapped car of Mike Wilson slowed with mechanical problems in turn four, but continued to roll around the track in the racing groove and front runner Barbra would run into the back of the slow car in turn one, busting his radiator and ending his hopes of taking home the American Heritage Harley Davidson. Boggs would inherit the lead and on the restart he pull away from second place Chuck Harper over the next six laps to claim his fourth American Heritage 101 title. Following Boggs across the line was Chuck Harper, Jason Witherite, Scott Edmisten, and Barry Doss rounding out the top five.
Greg Beam and Dave Defibaugh brought the AMRA Road Warrior Tour "Heritage 30" feature field to the green. Beam blasted from his front row starting position to the lead. The Xenia Tornado continued to stretch his lead over Defibaugh until the action was slowed on lap two when David McWilliams spun on the back stretch bringing out the caution. On the restart, Defibaugh would look under Beam before Beam flexed his muscle and began to stretch the lead again. Meanwhile back in the pack David McWilliams began to work his way through the field on the high side. McWillaims worked his way to third while Beam continued to hold the lead. McWilliams strong run ended when he retired on lap 22 with suspension problems. Beam would cruise to his second AMRA Road Warrior Tour feature win at Brushcreek. Following Beam across the line was Dave Defibaugh, Mark Dickson, Louie Krushansky, and Tim Roll rounding out the top five.
