CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Jason Meyers of Clovis, California, waited out a two hour rain delay before the program began, and a brief fog delay before the dashes to charge from 12th starting position to win the World of Outlaws “Freedom 40” A-feature Tuesday night before a packed house at Jim Nier’s K-C Raceway. The win was Myers third WoO win of the season and came in the 14th running of the “Freedom 40” event. In the companion Modified Lite feature Brian Woodhall edged Tracy Fritter for the win.
“People say these races are won from the first three rows, but we proved them wrong tonight,” said an elated Meyers. “I just want to thank all of you in the stands for sticking with us tonight—we had rain, we had fog, but you guys are still here and we love you for it! This is a great race track. Anytime it’s wide enough to race 4 wide and still have some room, you know it’s a great track.”
Track owner/promoter Jim Nier and track the track prep crew of Dave and Brian Karshner had the track in lightening fast form. The track absorbed about a half hour of steady rain and another hour of on and off showers to remain smooth and fast with multi-lane racing.
“This is a wide, super fast race track,” continued Myers. “Despite the weather the track stayed fast and smooth. My guys Steve (Swenson) and Bob (Curtis) put a (Hoosier) RD-15 on the car tonight, and it worked perfectly. This car was awesome all night long. We’ve had some good finishes this year, and some that haven’t been as good, but as long as we keep finishing up front sometimes, we’ll take it.”
In the early going, Bartlett, TN driver Jason Sides jumped out to a huge lead after getting the jump on first dash winner Donny Schatz. Immediately, Schatz and Australian driver Kerry Madsen locked horns in a race-long battle for the runner-up slot. Madsen passed Donny Schatz for 2nd low in turns 1&2, but Schatz got the spot back on the inside in 3&4.
That battle continued for at least ten circuits as Side’s once straight-away lead evaporated to twelve car lengths as lapped traffic now became a factor. Back in the pack Mark Kinser took 5th from Steve Kinser on lap ten, then on the 11th go round the caution waved for Kraig Kinser, who went pitside with a flat right rear tire.
Once again Sides continued his domination with a good restart, while the Schatz/Madsen battle became even more intense. That duo swapped positions at either end of the track, while Mark Kinser and Jason Myers pulled into the mix to make it a four-way battle for second.
As traffic once again became a factor, Sides slipped to an eight car length advantage, while Meyers, who started 12th, passed Mark Kinser for 4th on the top exiting turn four on lap 28. At one point four-wide, the fight for second continued and Sides’ lead was cut to a couple car lengths as now five cars engaged in a torrid race for the lead.
Watching in awe, fans rose to their feet as the quintet put on a classic battle on the Ross County high banks. Four wide racing continued for 2nd on lap 29 with Jason Meyers getting the best of the encounter with a bonzai high side pass with Mark Kinser in tow over Schatz and Kerry Madsen. Two laps later on lap 31, Meyers took the lead from Jason Sides on the top exiting turn four.
Sides’ mount appeared to lose traction as the race unfolded, while Meyers blitzed forward and the fight for second continued. On lap 38 Mark Kinser took second from Sides. As the leaders took the white flag, Danny Lasoski stopped in turn two. The caution flew, setting up a wild two lap dash to the finish. With two backmarkers between Meyers and Kinser, Meyers held on for a six car length victory.
Rounding out the top ten behind Meyers were Mark Kinser, Jason Sides, Donny Schatz , Kerry Madsen, Craig Dollansky, Dale Blaney, Steve Kinser, Chad Kemenah, and Paul McMahan
Some of the very best Modified Lite cars and drivers in America turned out to celebrate K-C’s “Freedom 40”. The star-studded field joined the outlaws as the support division with cars from 16 states and Australia packing the pits for an exciting night of action.
The winner of the first modified heat was former national champion Tracy Fritter over Pennsylvania's Eric Hay. Kevin Meadows claimed a big win in the second heat over Jim Adams and in the third heat Brian Woodhall took the win from sprint car driver Todd Kane who finished second. Pennsylvanian Mike Hay claimed the win over Lynn Knepper in heat number four.
The Mod-Lite feature was fast and exciting with lots of passing all the way back through the pack. Brian Woodhall grabbed the early lead and battled nose to tail with Tracy Fritter the entire race. At the end, however, Woodhall came home the winner. Following Woodhall and rounding out the top ten were Tracy Fritter, Kevin Meadows, Keith Swartzlander, Mike Hay, Tony Courtney, Lynn Knepper, Tyler Reno, Todd Kane, and David Seitz.
