Steve Bigley Wins Sportsman Special Event at I-77 Raceway Park

Fairplain, WV (July 15, 2008) – With 94 cars signed in and nearly 900 fans in attendance, Saturday July 12, Steve Bigely won the $500.00 Special Event for the Sportsman Division. On his first trip to I-77 Raceway Park in 2008, the driver of the 33 car earned the inside of row one by winning heat race number one, holding off the hard charging Nathan Preston in the 73N car. James Dennis in the 41 car would win heat two over the 88 car of Mike Wolfe. As the green flag flew over the 15 Sportsman cars, there was no looking back for Steve. He lead every lap of the 20-lap feature.
“The track was in great shape tonight,” stated Steve in an after race interview. “We would like to travel more, but the cost of gasoline makes it hard.”
Bigley was followed by 41-James Dennis, R22-Jim Rayner, 9-Luke Berg, and current points leader, R13-Richard Boggess.
With just 9 Super Late Models signed, in for the evening, the 2007 Track Champion and current points leader, Todd Smith in the T7 SLM, would win the heat race, holding off fast qualifier Randy Meador (14.68) to earn the inside of row one for the feature race. Smith lead every lap of the 25-lap feature to take home his first win at I-77 Raceway Park in 2008. Harold Redman Jr. driving the Steve Lucas-5 car would come from seventh to finish in the runner-up position. Fast qualifier, Meador, finished third, followed by 2X-Dallas Carpenter, and 2007 Semi Late Model Champion, Nelson Freshour.
The AMRA Modifieds had the high car count with 21 cars. Lee Neil in the 31 modified held off the June 7, feature winner (and currently third in points) JP Roberts in the 9R car. Rodney Keffer (currently second in points in the 63K car) and 5B-Buddy Brogan (sixth in points) battled for the outside of row one, with Keffer earning the spot. Heat three would go to the current points leader and three-time feature winner 000-Robert Garnes. With the field set for the feature, Garnes would advance two spots to take his fourth feature win of 2008. Outside pole sitter, Keffer, would maintain his spot while Neil fell back 2 spots to finish third. Buddy Brogan moved up 1 spot to finish fourth and 3C-Vince Conrad (fifth in points) would come from the ninth starting position to finish fifth. The Sudden Link AMRA King Of The Mountain Pro Late Models had two heat races for the 14 cars in attendance. Current points leader, 23-“Hauling” Chris Holley, would win the first heat race, holding off 3S-Lee Swain. Heat two would go to (4 time I-77 feature winner and second in points) Aaron “The Baron” Barley, who finished in front of 95-Eddie Clendenin. With the lineup set for the feature, Barley and Holley would lead the field to the green flag. As they battled for position, Barley took the top spot from Holley and never looked back on his way to his fifth feature win at I-77 in 2008. Holley held on to the second spot as “Bad” Brad Jarrell moved to third from his sixth starting position. The 5 car of Chris Reed advanced seven positions to finish fourth. Joe Harper in the 72 car was on the move going from thirteenth to fifth before the checker flag flew on the 20-lap feature. In the Mod Lite division, current points leader, Matt Hall in the 9-car, battled the 33 car of Dale Henry (currently fourth in the points) to win the first of two heat races. In the second heat race, Rodney Settle in the 39 car came out victorious over “Smoking” Joe McFee (sitting third in the points). Hall and Settle would lead the 16-car field to the green flag for 12 laps of feature action. As the dust settled, 5A-Phil Asseff would be the winner of his first feature of 2008.The feature win moved Asseff closer to Hall for the points lead. Hall finished second followed by Henry in third. Settle took the fourth place. Rodney Cossion in the 11C car advanced 2 spots to finish fifth.
With 8 Outlaw 4 Cylinders signed in for the evening, they would only get to run their feature race. 423-Terry Styer (4-time feature winner and currently third in points) elected to start on the tail to try and win a $50.00 bonus (if he could win another race). As the green flag fell, Danny Bush, in the 24 car and current points leader, took the lead. After 12 laps Styer would come from the tail to capture his fifth feature for 2008. Bush held on to second and Jesse Keaton in the 1K finished third. The fourth spot would go to 460-Scott Willis, and to round out the top five, (currently second in points) was 30-Tim Rhodes.
With the highest car count of the season in the newly formed 358 Modifieds, ten drivers were signed in. Buddy Brogan (third in the points in the 5B) would win the first heat race over H2O-Jimmy Halstead. Heat two winner would be current points leader 17-Kenny Newhouse, followed by 1- Ken Patrick. With the field set, Brogan and Newhouse (both feature winners in 2008) lead the field to the green flag. After twelve laps of action, Brogan would pick up his second feature win of the season. John Garrett (1 time feature winner) finished second in his 48 car from his fifth starting position. Newhouse finished third followed by Patrick.1J-Jason Huffman rounded out the top five.
In the Mini Wedges, 7-Zach Fox would win his fifth feature to extend his points lead over Martin Gibson, Hunter Cline, McKenzie Cochran, and Chase Frohnapel.
