UNION, KY--The Florence Speedway located in Union, KY will play host to the track's marquee event, the 22nd Annual North/South 100 August 12, 13 and 14. The famed 1/2 mile dirt track will pay $50,000 to win and $1500 to start the race which will take place on Saturday Night, August 14. The 22nd Annual North/South weekend will kick off with a special practice session on Thursday, August 12, followed on Friday with Late Model time trials which will set the six heat race lineups for the 22nd Annual North/South 100 on Saturday Night. Saturday will see the festivities start at 6 pm with the 4th Annual National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame induction ceremonies hosted by James Essex and Bret Emrick. After the Hall of Fame ceremonies are complete there will be six Late Model heat races, last chance races and the 100 lap 22nd Annual North/South 100 paying $50,000 to win again this year.
Last year's $50,000 to win North/South 100 was rated by many as the best dirt late model event of the 2003 season. Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, WI won the race last year's race in a very exciting 100 lap shootout that went down to the wire. It was the biggest win of Schlieper's career. Schlieper became the 13th different driver to hoist the North/South 100 trophy. In the race history only the late Jack Boggs has won this event three times while five drivers have won twice including Pat Patrick, Jeff Purvis, Scott Bloomquist, John Gill and Donnie Moran. Other drivers winning the race once include John Mason, Mike Head, Rodney Combs, Rick Aukland, Bob Pierce and Chub Frank.
The 4th Annual National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame will induct the class of 2004 in ceremonies before the 22nd Annual North/South 100 on Saturday Night, August 14. The class of 2004 includes drivers, chassis builders and contributors to the sport of late model racing. Inductee's include: Floyd Gilbert, Rodney Franklin, Butch Hartman, Ed Dixon, Ed Sanger, Bob Miller, Bob Newton, Larry Shaw, Ronnie Johnson and Chub Frank. A special honor will go to Mike Balzano. The ceremonies will start at 6 pm and may include a special guest appearance by legendary TV commentator and National Speed Sport News emeritus, Chris Economaki.
Florence Speedway in 2004 can boast of some of the highest weekly car counts in dirt late model racing. So far this year there have been eight different drivers pick up feature wins at the Home of the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame. Leading the way is four time and defending Florence Speedway late model track champion, Steve Landrum who leads the points standings heading into the North/South along with seven feature wins this year. Only Jerry Rice has won more than one main event at Florence Speedway in 2004. Other winners this year include the Spring 50 winner, Scott Bloomquist, the Ralph Latham Memorial winner, Mike Jewell who joins Scott James, Rick Corbin, Steve Francis and Roger Williams as drivers who have tasted victory this year at Florence.
After 15 feature events this year Steve Landrum leads the track points with 760 followed by Tony Traficant at 671, Roger Williams with 644, Bill Blair, Jr. at 593 and Ted Nobbe with 584 points. The rest of the top ten as of August 8 include Josh Williams, Rick Corbin, John Holt, Stanley Haddix and Jesse James Lay.
