CNN To Film At Wayne County Speedway This Weekend

Orrville, OH --- CNN (Cable News Network) will be making a weekend appearance at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH. CNN special projects producer Ted Rubenstein and a production crew will be visiting the 3/8 mile clay oval on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 to film various features for an upcoming documentary on grassroots dirt track racing with a focus on dirt Late Model racing. CNN will be on hand during Wayne County Speedway’s 40th anniversary celebration.
“We’re producing a documentary on dirt track racing, a sport based on grassroots, and we’re looking forward to visiting drivers and tracks,” commented Ted Rubenstein, a long time producer for CNN. “”We’re looking at the sport and its importance at the grassroots level and how it has grown over the years. To that end we have been filming segments with some drivers and in addition to visiting Wayne County Speedway we are planning on filming additional segments in September at Eldora Speedway for the WORLD 100.”
“We’ll be at Wayne County Speedway to film a segment with Doc Lehman, who has also been consulting and advising us on this project since last winter. We’ll also be doing some filming on the grounds of the race track.” Lehman is a co-host of Dirt Nation™ presented by Lucas Oil and is also a long-time journalist, publicist and marketing agent. He is also a former promoter of Wayne County Speedway and currently owns the popular DirtAmericaOnline.com website.
In addition, CNN will return to Wayne County Speedway on Sunday June 26 to film the Dirt Nation™ presented by Lucas Oil radio show, co-hosted by Lehman and Dave Seay, who will be on hand at the track doing a live radio broadcast Sunday from 12:30 – 2:30 PM EST during the track’s 40th birthday celebration.
The CNN documentary will be edited during the fall months and broadcast internationally at a date to be announced. “We’ve been on the road filming a couple segments with dirt Late Model drivers and we have found that this sport is far and away bigger than we imagined,” said Rubenstein, who is based at CNN headquarters in Atlanta, GA. “It’s been a real eye-opening experience and we’re looking forward to our visits to Wayne County and Eldora speedways.”
On Saturday night Wayne County Speedway kicks off its anniversary weekend on June 25 when the track will host a weekly racing program spotlighted by their annual Kids Nite Extravaganza. A full racing program featuring American Payroll Advance Super Late Models, RPM Motorsports Modifieds, Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks and the Federated Auto Parts Mini-Stocks will be on hand. Each Saturday night the gates open at 3:00 PM, hot-laps/qualifying at 5:30 PM and racing at 7:00 PM. General admission prices are adults $12.00, senior citizens $10.00 and 15 and under admitted free, pits $25.00. Wayne County Speedway is also allowing all active military personnel, spouses and children to enter free with a military identification card to all events.
On Sunday June 26 the Federated 40 Birthday Bash will be held to honor the track’s 40th season. Wayne County Speedway opened for the first time on June 26, 1965. During the Sunday program the dirt Late Models will headline with the Modifieds and Mini Stocks in attendance. The 40-lap main event will pay $3,000 to win and $200 to start. Gates open at 12:30 PM with qualifying at 2:00 PM and opening ceremonies for the new Wayne County Speedway Hall of Fame starting at 3:00 PM. In addition there will be an ice cream and cake party, race car rides for kids and much more. General admission will be $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and ages 15 & under free admission. pits $28.
On Monday June 27 the Pete Jacobs Memorial presented by Federated Auto Parts will once again headline the mighty winged 410 Sprint Cars in a $5,000 to win, $400 to start, 40-lap main event. The Super Late Models will share the card that will feature a $2,000 to win, $200 to start feature event. The 2005 edition of the Pete Jacobs Memorial presented by Federated Auto Parts comes 40 years and one day after the track first opened on June 26, 1965. It also comes on the track’s traditional Ohio Sprint Speedweek Monday date that has been at Wayne County Speedway for 20 years. Gates for the Monday June 27 event will open at 4:30 PM with racing starting at 7:30 PM. Admission is $18 for adults, ages 15 & under admitted free, Seniors $15, Military Personnel & families free and Pits $30.
